A gentleman came to see me as he wanted to look his best for his son's wedding. He had no teeth and felt that the wedding photos would be improved if he did. We decided on implants and ceramic bridges fitted to them. We could have also made an acrylic denture bridge but the decision was to go for the ceramic bridges.
Dentures can improve the appearance and function of your mouth. They can give you a full smile and the ability to chew food properly. Even though dentures are often associated with people who have neglected their teeth many people also lose teeth through trauma or other disease. A need for dentures is when the teeth are lost, the bone and gums flatten as they have nothing to support anymore. This often leads to the face having a closed up appearance, there are no teeth to stop the jaws meeting.
Dentures have somewhat a mixed reputation. They can be seen as a symbol of getting old and unattractive. Images of dentures falling out when eating leading to embarassing situations. But this need not be the case, well designed and constructed dentures can be comfortable and difficult to detect that they are not natural teeth. What makes good dentures are a dental team that understand the intricacies of dentures and how to get the best results.
It is often a great assumption that the latest version of something is the best. Demands have changed and the best comparison I can make is how IKEA may be modern and affordable but not always the best quality. Don't mistake this for snobbery I buy from IKEA, its just that sometimes I demand something that is of the highest quality rather than contemporary design or cheaper.
Its common for people to want to have the gaps closed in their teeth. Sometimes these gaps are caused by the teeth being twisted out of line, so gaps appear between the teeth. By twisting these teeth around into the correct position the gaps close naturally leaving an attractive smile. If your teeth are over crowded they can also twist out of line as they are fitting into an overcrowded space.
Crooked teeth, twisted teeth and gaps between teeth can be treated with modern tooth moving techniques in dental practices.
I have heard this a few times from denture wearing patients who have found that they cannot eat or chew food without discomfort. If you wear dentures the fitting surface compresses your gums and they begin to dissappear along with your supporting jaw bone. This can lead to dentures becoming loose, making eating uncomfortable.
You know the credit card advert, so much stuff to buy and yet some things in life money just cannot buy. Its a bit like this in dentistry. As a dentist we can help you keep your teeth and gums healthy, move your teeth back into a natural line, fill in the gaps with restorations or change the colour with whitening. All this leads to a healthy mouth and to smile more. I never bill my patients for smiling more this part cannot be bought.
If you don't like your crooked teeth and would like them straightened give some thought to the new brace treatments that are available. What is important to consider is that we usually associate crooked teeth with our front teeth, but it is equally important to consider your back teeth aswell.
