New Dentures in Surrey

What are Good Dentures?

Dentures have somewhat  a mixed reputation. They can be seen as a symbol of getting old and unattractive. Images of dentures falling out when eating leading to embarassing situations. But this need not be the case, well designed and constructed dentures can be comfortable and difficult to detect that they are not natural teeth. What makes good dentures are a dental team that understand the intricacies of dentures and how to get the best results.

Why Do Dentures have So Much Pink Gums?

The purpose of the pink part of a denture is to provide the look at feel of your natural gums. When you lose your teeth, the bones and gums can resorb leaving a flatter ridge. This leads to your face 'closing' up creating an older looking face. The pink gums of a denture not only help with appearance but they also support your cheeks leading to a natural appearance. Sometimes the pink part of a denture can look quite large, but when placed in the mouth it provides the necessary support as well as a natural smile.

Are teeth all the same size?

Tooth size and shape can differ massively between people. There are several ways of identifying which tooth to choose for a certain person. If there are no teeth present then a look at the patients face shape and jaw size can give indications as to the shape of the denture tooth. We have literally hundreds of different teeth to choose from and this allows the dentist the best chance of getting the most natural looking denture possible.

Not only the tooth but how it is placed in the denture has an impact on how natural the denture looks. If you are over 60 years old, it will look unnatural to have the teeth of a 25 year old. But this does not mean the final appearance is unattractive, just more appropriate to the age of the denture wearer.

When we are young our teeth are different in both shape and colour to when we are older. A young tooth also reflects light differently. This may not seem too important  but as we get older the internal colour of our teeth changes as does the amount of clear enamel that is worn away by eating and over vigourous tooth brushing. It is important to make dentures that suit the person wearing them.

How do you know where to put the teeth?

If the gums and bone have resorbed away, how do we, the dentist and technician, know how to put the teeth in the correct place so you can chew properly? We achieve this by measuring the dimensions of your mouth, from the hinge of your jaw to the position of your front teeth we want to achieve a balanced bite that is as comfortable when you are chewing as when you are smiling. We use wax bites that we can adjust to the support of your cheeks as well as record aspects of your front teeth position in relation to your lip line. In other words, we want to get your smile right!
